Senior Director of Operations, SF LGBT Center

Position Description: The Senior Director of Operations is a key leadership position on the SF LGBT Center’s staff. The Senior Director of Operations partners with the Executive Director to sustain and support the Center’s programs and systems in alignment with the agency’s mission and long-term vision, including our commitments to equity and racial justice. This position oversees and leads the Center’s facilities (community engagement via the building, maintenance and repair, and coordination of tenants and event holders), finance, human resources, and administration. The Senior Director of Operations currently oversees a team of 7 with three direct reports, including the Director of People and Organizational Culture, the Associate Director of Finance, and the Facilities Manager. This is a leadership position, and the Senior Director of Operations supports the Center’s organizational values that include a demonstrated commitment to racial equity and inclusion, a commitment to serve the most vulnerable, and accountability and transparency.


Finance / Administration: Directly Supervise the Associate Director of Finance and oversee fiscal and administrative systems including compliance with GAAP, non-profit requirements and restrictions, and city/state/federal grant requirements. Ensure that policies and procedures are updated, current and are followed. Support the Associate Director of Finance in developing all aspects of long and short-term plans, strategies, outcomes and department budgets, including:

  • Oversee annual agency budgeting process, including program, grant and contracts budgets.
  • Ensure production of timely and accurate financial statements.
  • Oversight responsibility for fiscal and administrative compliance with grants and government contracts, including admin/fiscal monitoring and ensuring that financial and administrative reports are submitted in a timely manner. Ensure administrative compliance with San Francisco Sunshine and State Brown Act requirements.
  • Overall responsibility for completion of the audit report as well as tax returns, annual filing statements, property tax exemption requests and all required local, state, and federal reports.
  • Ensure that Center owned equipment is purchase, tracked and catalogued.
  • Manage consulting contracts for IT support, database maintenance, staff recruitment, payroll, and other HR and administrative support contracts.

Facilities: Directly supervise the Facilities Manager and oversee operations of the Center’s building including compliance with all current federal, state, and local laws, requirements and health and safety standards. Staff the Board of Director’s Facilities Committee. Support the Facilities Manager in developing all aspects of long and short-term plans, strategies, outcome evaluation and department budgets, including:

  • Developing and maintaining policies and practices related to community engagement in the physical building that align with agency values and support health and safety for all building occupants.
  • Ensure that all short-, medium- and long-term building maintenance is completed according to industry standards for a public access commercial building. Oversee building maintenance contracts to ensure that they are competitively priced, are current, and that services are in alignment with contracts. Regularly review / update the Capital Replacement Assessment and maintain cost projections related to long term building maintenance/repair needs.
  • Overall responsibility for coordination of long-term tenant relationships (lease negotiations, trouble shooting, and communications) as well as short term event rentals.

Human Resources / Organizational Culture: Directly supervise the Director of People and Organizational Culture and work with the Executive Director and other agency leadership to develop and cultivate a strong and healthy workplace culture with a wholeperson approach to management and supervision, including:

  • Support program directors to build strong and healthy teams that provide services that are aligned with the evolving needs of the communities we serve and are achieving the desired impact.
  • Support, build and mentor staff as leaders in their work areas and movement.
  • Build agency and team resiliency, strength and capacity to effectively address and resolve challenges and problems.
  • Create and sustain an organizational culture that includes accountability, transparency, staff engagement, and strong communication.
  • Maintain policies, procedures and practices related to agency management and human resources that are fully aligned with all federal, state and local legal and compliance requirements regarding employment as well as aligned with the Center’s values.

 Other Related Duties:

  • Partner with the Executive Director to achieve overall organizational goals and objectives. Interface with the Board of Directors on appropriate issues.
  • Serve as a member of the Center’s executive leadership team
  • Other related duties as assigned.


  1. Commitment to the mission of the SF LGBT Center. Understanding of the needs of vulnerable LGBT communities, strategies to meet their needs, and ability work with a broad range of constituents, program participants, and stakeholders representing the full diversity of the LGBTQ and allied communities.
  2. Minimum of 4 years management experience, with a strong preference for management experience in a nonprofit setting
  3. Experience in managing teams and supervising staff with a wide range of work styles and with a racial equity lens.
  4. Excellent understanding of the principles and practices of human resources, financial management and facilities management.
  5. Understanding of nonprofit organizational structure, leadership and management issues, including personnel management, budget development, fiscal management, facilities management and strategic planning.
  6. Excellent administrative skills. Demonstrated proficiency in Office 365, including Excel, Word and Outlook. Experience with QuickBooks and/or Salesforce a plus.
  7. Must be accurate and detail oriented and possess strong organizational and time management skills as well as the ability to prioritize competing priorities in a complex and fast -paced environment. This includes the ability to work under pressure with tight deadlines.
  8. Must be able to handle sensitive information with tact, diplomacy and discretion.
  9. Strong interpersonal relationship skills and the ability to work both independently and within a team-oriented organizational structure.
  10. Strong verbal and written communication skills, including negotiations, and effective communication with diverse audiences.
  11. Innovative and entrepreneurial approach, including solution-oriented approaches to complex issues. Ability to adapt to changing environments and priorities.


This position is primarily office based at the Center’s 1800 Market Street location with an ability to negotiate a schedule of remote work up to a maximum of 20% time.

Essential physical requirements:

  • Must be able to operate a computer and other common office machinery such as a copier/fax/printer up to eight hours/day daily.
  • Must be able to remain in a stationary position for periods of several hours daily.
  • Must be able to lift to 30 pounds on an occasional basis.
  • Must be able to work in a shared office space with 2 or more employees in the same office with moderate levels of noise.

Hours are primarily Monday – Friday with regular need for evening or weekend work. Work schedules are negotiable within a standard 8:00 am – 7:00 pm window.

Local travel will be required for meetings or offsite events. Out-of-town travel is infrequent and negotiable. No car required.
